about 19

19 is the first scholarly, refereed web journal dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary study in the long nineteenth century. Based at Birkbeck College, under the general editorship of Professor Hilary Fraser (Geoffrey Tillotson Chair, Birkbeck College, University of London), 19 aims to extend the activities of the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies by making the high quality, original scholarship presented at its regular conferences, symposia and other events available to an international audience. We will publish two themed issues annually, each consisting of six peer-reviewed articles that will showcase the broadest range of new research in nineteenth-century studies.

more than just a journal

• 19 will build an ever-expanding archive of pioneering material, much of it unique to the journal.

•  Pieces will be presented with a rich variety of visual and audio material that cannot be incorporated in more traditional methods of publishing.

•  We will invite readers to join the debate by responding to our keynote articles; the most stimulating or interesting responses will be published online.

•  Alongside the publication of original material, we will offer with each article handpicked and maintained links to relevant online resources, such as difficult-to-obtain primary texts, scholarly websites and other criticism. Reading an article at 19 will be a stimulating, interactive experience.

•  We will introduce readers to the latest and best online resources in nineteenth-century studies, through review articles written by those involved in such projects. From digitised periodical archives to innovative ways of interacting with texts, we aim to let you know what's new and exciting in digital humanities scholarship.

•  Unlike traditional print journals, we will enable readers to follow the afterlife of each article, supplying links to related work by each author.
